Good Workplace Communication Is Vital

  Good Workplace Communication Is Vital

Good workplace communication is vital and it constantly evolves with newer, better, faster technologies. When technology is installed onto a poor communication foundation, things start to go wrong. Whether in-person, over the phone, via email or through video conference there’s one constant: we’re talking to people.

An workforce will invariably come from various backgrounds: educationally, socially, economically, geographically and culturally. Communicating (especially communicating effectively) across these differences can require some serious savvy. Effective communication in the workplace is vital. As coaches, it’s really important we understand this.

It’s Easier To Communicate With Those You Know

The better you know someone, the easier it is to communicate with them. Listening to and learning from co-workers lends to a greater understanding of how they function. Work atmosphere or time constraints can hinder one’s ability to have a close relationship with someone, but there are other ways to learn how to communicate better. Personality questionnaires like Myers-Briggs, provide insight into the characteristics and inner-workings of individuals without defining a person. As Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) focuses on preferences not traits it’s a non-judgemental approach to understanding style and preference. In particular this is true when it comes to communication. It addresses a default mode of ‘being’ and we do tend to function in default in a pressured environment.

For example, a room full of typical extroverts is often quite loud and dynamic. This is because extroverts tend to process ideas/emotions externally and have a need to talk about it. Introverted types however, need time to process information internally. Introverts must be allowed to process at their own speed and in their own way or ‘psychological flood’ ensues. Psychological flood happens when an individual becomes overwhelmed with frustration. Another way of looking at it is that they can’t communicate in the manner most comfortable to them (their default communication style). For teams to improve productivity and collaboration, it’s important that communication styles are understood.

Understanding Different Communication Styles

It is crucial to understand what makes your client’s employees tick communication-wise. When you can show your client how to inspire their staff, transformation follows. If your clients’ employees feel fulfilled and valued, they’re more likely to do their best work. For clients to identify and meet their employees’ needs, effective communication is key. It’s possible to do this and remain focused on business objectives.

Be Aware Of Individual’s Communication Styles

Even with a small degree of awareness of communication style, you can transform the communication within your team. That’s when the magic happens.
